The Best WordPress Mobile Plugins

A large percentage of internet users now browse the internet using smartphones or tablets; which is why it is so important that your WordPress design caters towards mobile users.

There are many case studies that illustrate how mobile usage is increasing, though it is better to see this for yourself by examining your own traffic. For example, Google Analytics shows that over the last month, 84.35% of visitors to used a desktop or laptop computer, 10.91% used a mobile phone, and 4.73% used a tablet.

Mobile usage is much higher on my other websites. On , for example, Google Analytics shows that 33.10% of visitors from the last month were using a mobile phone and 11.72% used a tablet. That represents almost 45% of all traffic for the website.

  1. only problem i had with Handheld by ET is that the menu did’nt work on Android native browser (worked ok on chrome).
from hwat i saw in the documentation, it wasn’t just my problem.

    • Sorry about that. If you have opened a ticket in our support forms about it, then it will be logged as a bug and fixed.

      • Or you can wait months before anything is done. Lucid Theme has a display issue with secondary menu under Safari reported by several users since months, and still nothing is fixed.

      • Hi Nick
First thing need to be said, love your work 🙂 ET offers a great set of themes that helped me a lot in my first steps as WP developer. Thanks 🙂

That said, the reason i did’nt open a ticket was that i saw there was one already open regarding the issue, and the response was not very sattisfying (mind you, i purchased my license this year specifacly for handheld for a client and was disapointed).

        Take care
        Zvi

  2. To be honest the way you guys make my site fit to any mobile device is brilliant. I haven’t even needed to look anywhere else. So thanks from me and my clients love it too.

    • Agree, wholeheartedly.

Large image downloads are the only possible negative I can see with the elegantly responsive themes from ET. Does the mobile versions of, say, Divi pull the smaller versions of the images, if available (e.g., for a slider, pulling the medium image size instead of full)?

  3. Any thoughts on making the handheld plugin free to all paying members in the near future?
Just a thought, but now that you’ve raised the yearly fee and are really only working on one theme (which is GREAT theme), it might help you acquire more customers and keep some that are on the fence happy.

I have tried a few of these plugins with limited results for some reason. I’d love to be able to keep it in the family with an Elegant Theme mobile plugin, but really don’t want to pay (cuz I’m a cheap b*stard).

On a related mobile note — one plugin that I love is the — first thing I add to a good responsive site.

    Thanks for the great themes….

  4. If we are using an ET theme, do we need to install the handheld plugin? I thought ET themes were responsive in design?

    • Kevin Muldoon

      No it is essential.

Though you may prefer a theme that has been designed specifically for mobile phones.

  5. This list is great. I’m very interested in the mobile CSS plugin for client sites. I have to agree with marks comment above though. My site runs on divi and it displays perfectly with no plugins required. I also have a few client sites that run on divi with the same lovely result.

    • Kevin Muldoon

Glad you enjoyed the article Adam 🙂

    • Loving your site – really good use of Divi. Think the “contact us” is very sleek too. Good job.

      • Thanks Mark. I just checked out your site too. I like it a lot. It is amazing how many different ways people have made beautiful websites with divi

    • I agree … Nice site.
I too .. love your floating pop up contact form!
Also love your contact page with thumbs up etc … Great job!
      Very creative.
Is the floating contact form easy to create? Did you code it in?

    • Hi Adam, while your site is cool, I love your contact form, can you hint me which plugin you use? Thanks 🙂

  6. Unless I’m missing something, I thought that an ET responsive theme like Divi, eliminated the need for Mobile plugins.

What are the advantages of one over the other?

BTW, I find your posts very informative, and read them everyday. I just wish they were responsive because I view them on my Samsung S4 android.

    • Kevin Muldoon

I believe most new Carpetcleaninghaddontownship designs are responsive, however some of the older designs are not. 🙂

  7. Sorry for seemingly idiotic question, but why would I need the mobile plugin for a theme that is designed to be responsive in the first place?

    Elijah.

    • You wouldn’t. This list is for those with themes that aren’t responsive.

    • Kevin Muldoon

Tim is right. It is primarily for those that do not have a responsive theme, though you could always use a mobile plugin if you didn’t like the look of your responsive theme.

  8. This is very much appreciated, Kevin. Another great post from ET team

  9. I use the divi theme. It says it’s responsive but my site displays poorly on smartphones. Will installing one of these plugins fix that?

    • I just noticed how redundant my question is. But I’m still puzzled why my responsive ET site looks so bad..

      • What’s your site. Be interesting too see ?

        • Looks good what’s up with it ?

          • A few people told me it wasn’t working properly. Last night I tested it using a few website analyzers and the grades came back poor. Maybe it’s because of my image sizes… I’ll post the sites I used when I get back on my laptop tonight.

And thank you all so much for keeping watch of the comments like this! I feel so loved! *blushes* But seriously, it’s really cool you guys care so much.

It looks good using this site:

          • Upon further examination, it appears I scored low on ‘accessibility, How accessible the website is to mobile and disabled users’ because of poor ‘code quality’ and ‘headings’. Not because of mobile responsiveness (that’s actually a 10/10). You may see my confusion.. Still a little concerning since I didn’t mess with but a little CSS code since using Divi. But I don’t believe this is a definitive test. I may post this concern in the forums though to see what you guys say.

And this blog post is great. I will try out a few of these plugins this week just to pretty up my kind of boring looking mobile pages.

    • These plugins are not necessary for response themes. Divi should look great on mobile devices. If you are experiencing any problems, please open a ticket in our support forums so that we can help you out.

  10. All my sites are now Mobile compatible. Its the way forward. My nexus site looks great on a mobile.

  11. Hi

Great post. I have tried Handheld and WP Touch Mobile, but they don’t show my elegant themes shortcodes which is very important for me.

Do any of the other ones show elegant themes shortcodes?

    Thanks!

  12. While I love a number of mobile plugins reviewed on this post, I’m yet to use ET handheld on Gleam theme (which I taught should be responsive on the go) to build a portfolio website for my Geophysicist brother. But when I installed it I was a little befuddled and taught the plugin is kinda complicated to setup hence, I allowed it to rest for some time before I go into her again. However Kevin, your post had hinted me where to start and how to use it. Thank you very much for you premium tips. Cheers 😀

    • Kevin Muldoon

No problem. Glad you found it useful.

  13. Hi, can I know which plugin can turn WPMU MarketPress site into mobile app?

    • Kevin Muldoon

Sorry, I am not sure what you are asking. Can you clarify your question.

  14. Nice list of plugins. Some of are very new for me. Thanks for sharing it.

  15. I see a lot of options.
Even now themes have also been designed to be friendly with a variety of screens.
However, this information helps us all

  16. And there is Graphene Mobile Neo

From some of the comments, there are users who are wondering the difference between responsive themes and mobile themes. I would safely say that a well coded mobile theme such as WP Touch means a faster mobile website.

  17. I can see that most (maybe all of them) are good for blog style site. How about them when they are used for a website which is not at all blog style (latest posts or blog posts in an order). Say, we build a website on Divi with homepage full of images, content in a order not similar to any blog style. How will them plugins perform on them, how will they display content then, especially the ET mobile handheld? Would really like to know.

but I must say it’s really a very informative article as always Kevin.

    • Kevin Muldoon

Divi is responsive, so you will not need to use a mobile plugin 🙂

  18. As usual nice article Kevin 🙂 Very much useful for mobile & WordPress lovers. Thanks for share

  19. I purchased Mobile Smart Pro with it does not work I lost my money

  20. Great post. I recently purchased the wpmobilize plugin from CodeCanyon at only $18 and it works like a charm. Does exactly what I need plus it looks great on mobile devices. Keep up the good work 🙂

    David.

  21. I have been using WP Total Cache for mobile display and it’s work for me
Thanks for list Kevin, nice post as usual 🙂

  22. I have used most of these plugins, as you mentioned these are very good for optimizing our site to mobile audience.

  23. Is there a plugin that just adds a sticky header with a call link and map link to responsive sites when viewed in mobile browsers?

  24. I run Shining Star Photo Booth, an event entertainment company that provides photo booth rentals. I have based my site on Chameleon () and I have tried using the various mobile site plugins and sometimes find that Firefox wont display the normal site, but rather the mobile version. Does anyone know why?

  25. The Wapple plugin is NOT free. You lose a lot of credibility by not mentioning this.

    • It looks free to me:

      • Hi Nick,
It is Not free. You need to buy a “Dev key” once you install it.
Starting at 5 UK pounds per month.
There is no way to get it for free, and if it exist, it is impossible to get it. So I guess it should not be marked as free. Specially ET being such a great place to get good information.
        Cheers!

  26. An excellent article as usual!

  27. Hi Kevin, thanks for this useful post.

I decide to use WP Smart Mobile Theme Plugin – and I have one technical question.

Why I have an option to put analytic code inside this plugin settings page? I thought that analytic code from AllInOne SEO track all my traffic because I see mobile and tablet visits in my analytic reports.

    I’m I missing something?

    • Hey Kevin,

WP Smart Mobile comes with an option to enter your Google Analytics for those users who don’t have a plugin such as All-In-One SEO that also has the option to input your Google Analytics code into your site. In addition, since we are serving a completely separate theme to your mobile users, the new theme also needs to have the Google Analytics code in it, regardless if you have it on your current desktop-theme’s code.

However, if you are already tracking your mobile traffic then feel free to leave the setting blank!

Hope this clears things up a bit.

  28. Here is another good one to add to your list – .

This is the only plugin I was able to find that allows you to set a unique mobile redirect URL for each page and each post. All the other plugins you can only set the same redirect URL for an entire website.

This also works with tablets as well.

  29. Duda is also a very good plugin to build a mobile friendly website. This plugin has tons of mobile templates to choose from.

  30. Wow so many plugins available. But I still choice responsive design is better than use plugins.

  31. Hello,
Any ideas on what might me the best mobile menu (or mobile theme plugin, if necessary) for Carpetcleaninghaddontownship eStore? It isn’t a responsive theme and customers are having a hard time reading the menu. I’ve tried WP Responsive Menu which I normally use, but it didn’t work well.

  32. there is no where to show advertisements or change them around. this sucks,

  33. Most of your designs are wonderful but I am looking for a web that can make for motivation for my visitor and It can also push notification every I just have post a new article.

  34. have used most of these plugins, there is no where to show advertisements or change them around

  35. Very good plugin to build a mobile friendly website. Thanks for sharing…
