Introducing Explorable, Our Location-Based WordPress Theme
Explorable is a location-based theme that pins your posts on a map. Listings become part of a journey, and exploring your website has never been so fun. With the ability to create location-based listings, the theme is transformed into a tool for building travel blogs, local business directories, travel guides and more. Combined with user star ratings, a full fledged blog and a fully responsive design; the possibilities are endless!

Google Maps Integration

When you create a listing, you can easily drop a pin on the map and give your post a location. When a user browses your listings, they are presented with a fully interactive map with each of your listings placed on their desired locations.

Filterable Search Listings

Your listing are easy to explore with our advanced fitlerable search settings. Your map can filtered by multiple categories and star ratings to quickly narrow down search results.

Visitor Ratings System

Explorable comes with its own custom ratings system. When an author creates a post, they can give it a star rating. Visitors can also rate each listing, giving the theme Yelp-like functionality when used as a local business directory.

Responsive Design

The use of mobile devices is on the rise, and it is important for your website to be ready for those mobile visitors. Explorable comes fully responsive, meaning that the design will adapt to whatever screen size is being used to browse. You website will look great and will be a breeze to read on mobile phones and desktop computers alike.
And let’s not forget about tablets! Explorable will also look great on your iPad or Android tablet in both portrait and landscape mode.

Unlimited Colorschemes

Explorable allows you to easily customize your theme’s colors and background images via the WordPress Theme Customizer. You can quickly change font colors, navigation bar colors, background colors, background images and more.
I know this theme took a bit longer to finish than usual, but I hope that it was worth the wait! Let us know what you think in the comments 🙂

  2. A++

    • Nice theme im thinking to use it in a Barcelona Directory!!! Good Job

  3. Wow! Wow Wow! ET you’re just mind blowing 😀

    • Way cool! Some very valid points! I appreciate you
penning this article and the rest of the website is very good.

  4. Listo para revisar es interesante tema.
    Gracias Nick.

  5. Great new theme, Nick & team! I’m sure lot of thought and planning went behind creating this. The Listing view which instantly connects on map is truly awesome.
There are few issues I would like to report…
    a. The map misses the zoom in/out slider which is a must. The zoom on click moves the icon out of view area – it should be pinned to centre.
    b. On mobile view, the icon description box is out of view area.
I’m sure you can fix these and other in the updates. Overall this is a welcome change from the usual business themes. No doubt this would be a good theme for many destination sites. Keep up the good work!

    • iZen,

The “zoom” feature works by default on users that have a mouse with a “scroll wheel” — rolling up and down while the cursor is hovered over the map area will zoom.

I agree, the traditional “Google Map Controls” would be nice to have integrated.

  6. Can the theme display the listing at a city level? Showing the map at country level is not too practical when your listings are coffee shops: you need to scroll down at each listing.

  7. Nice design Nick, very different then expectation, Filterable search option and responsive view is awesome. Simply superb design

  8. I totally agree with Jason Mailley. We need some sort of a zooming control. There are also some other minor issues to be addressed, but all with good time I suppose. Let’s digest it first and analyze it before coming to conclusions.

This is a very nice theme – my top 3 pick from Elegant Design. We need more such themes. Themes that change WordPress into a different application, like e-commerce (Styleshop, etc…), the ElegantEstate, AskIt, etc… I hope some sort of an auction/reverse auction theme will be coming our way soon too.

Nicely done guys, nothing but respect here !!!

    • Zoming is done via the mouse wheel. This is standard in all google maps applications, so I didn’t think it was something we would need to worry about reminding users about. However, we may considering adding additional zoom controls.

      • I know about the zooming via the mouse wheel, or double clicking on the screen. That is not the issue here.

Let’s say I want to setup a directory for a small city. I will need the map to zoom in to that city, so my visitors won’t have to manually zoom in every time the page loads.

At the very least, we need a way to manually set the initial zoom factor.

The best way to accomplish this of course automatically, the way the comprehensive-google-map-plugin operates. It determines the optimum way to display the map, depending the situation. For example, if you only have listings for Los Angeles, the map automatically zooms in Los Angeles. If you have listing in Los angeles and Las Vegas, the map starts with a zoom factor where Los angeles and Las Vegas are visible. And if I have a listing to cover just a small neighborhood, it will be zoomed to that street only.

      • The manual zoom setting is in the fullwidth_map.php, located in the includes folder, and the new updated version of the theme, fixed the other (mostly visual problems), so now I’m really happy with this !!!

      • Using a mouse to zoom in is OK when using desktop and laptops. How about tablets and mobiles?
Woud definitely buy the theme if there is an automatic close up zooming in/out function. Please see examples in the theme Rent&Buy

      • Hello, my name is Andrea and I would like to know how I can put a specific location in the theme. I don´t need the world map, I need a map from Seville. I don´t know nothing about programming (HTML, CSS…) o something like this. I would like to know if there is a posibility to change this since “explorable theme options”.

        Thank you.

    • I agree with Nick from California. This is well done and I hope you add some more themes like this. If you’re looking for suggestions, eVid is good but getting a little long in the tooth.

  9. Functionality and looks. Well done. One of the best.

  10. Great theme… Looks great!

  11. Thanks Nick, I Love This Theme!!!

  12. So far this themes is simple, responsive and great. Me, as a part of ET developer license holder, I am very proud to promote your themes to my clients

  13. Explorable is a great WordPress theme. I might use it to build one of clients’ website

  14. One of the best location based theme that matches the functionality like yelp.

best thing about this theme is mouse wheel zooming for Google maps.

  15. I just downloaded and tested. The backend is easy to use. Good job Nick.

  16. Now, this looks amazing! This is what ElegantThemes brand is about!

  17. That’s the I wanted.

It has extra ordinary theme for location..

    Thanks to ET.

  18. Thanks for another great theme Nick. I’ll try it today..

  19. Really awesome ! This WP theme is really well done with this location. A nice creation guyz !

  20. Thanks Great Job

  21. Beauty….Google maps is nicely integrated in this theme. I love it…

  22. Hmm… this might be useful for an idea I’ve been playing with. can you default it to zoom over one particular country when loaded?

    • We don’t have a setting for this, but it’s easy with a tweak to one of the files. We have a solution in the forums.

  23. Hi Nick,

The theme looks awesome 🙂 Can’t wait to move my site (Top 100 Experiences) over to the new theme.

Is there any way to easily convert existing “Posts” to the new “Listings” format?

    • Hey Luke, this can be done if you have access to the database. If you still need any assistance converting your post to listings just let me know!

      • Hi,

Can you tell me what steps I should take to convert the posts?

        Thank you very much!

  24. This just makes me want to travel so I can create a blog! Beautiful design!

  25. I will loo forward to playing with this one. I have six travel sites, hoping this may be a solution for one of them. Thanks for thinking of the travel universe with this one.

  26. I thought it was an April Fool’s joke when this theme was finally released. Thanks ET! Can’t wait to start using it for my clients!

    • It’s no joke 🙂 I hope that it works out well for your clients!

  27. Great theme and just what we needed!

    1. Any plans to adapt this theme’s features as a WP Plugin?

    2. For the star-ratings feature, is there any plan to integrate Yelp, Places or Foursquare for ratings and reviews of locations?

    • We don’t have any plans to do so at the moment, but I will certainly keep it in mind! Thanks for the suggestions.

  28. Hello, you can see a sample on our website, and publish your company, great theme

  29. What a great theme! Just A great idea! Logic, but ….
I hope that this gives you a nice niche for ET.

    But again, love it!

  30. Glad to see it is finally out. Nice job Nick 😉

I have one question for you and I’d be more than happy if you could answer this one. Having in mind a local business direcroty, do you have a feature that allows any business to submit their own business services and adress to the directory ? And on the other end, all we have to do on our side would be to approve the submitted business.

If not, do you have any suggestion that would allow us to do something similar to this ?

    Thanks !

    • I’m still checking it out, but, I don’t think so.

    • I also really need this feature! I’d be so grateful if elegant themes developed this idea, I’m sure loads of people want this!

  31. Great theme for travellers

  32. Another great theme, Nick.

And like Nick from California, I am pleased to learn that it is possible to adapt the default zoom.

  33. Thank you for this simple and great theme. It is awesome that now I can give location to my post..

  34. Great theme – lots of things we can do with it! One minor issue for review:

When viewing on my iPhone, if I click on a location marker, the description flows behind the top navigation bar and is not viewable. It’s so difficult to scroll down because the map moves when touched.

All in all, great theme and look forward to using it but hard to use on iPhone as is…FYI.

  35. Great theme and just what a needed!

But it would be really cool with an option for user to upload listings like on your e-list theme…

    Kind Regards

  36. Great theme for travelers. It’s fully responsive and we can use it to check our location via smartphone or tablet. Awesome!

  37. On my computer at work , running Windows XP and Ie7.0.5730.13CO
    there is a rendering problem!
Listning headlines and stars a located half on the listning images (as it sopose to be) and half of map background. Does`nt look good!

Btw. can you reposition the startposition for the map/tarrain icon … ?

Hmmm maybe i should post it in your sopport forum 😉

  38. Nice layout, travel related sites have an emerging interest these days, so it’s a good move from your side. The listings are great, didn’t see such an interesting interpretation by now, good job!

  39. Awesome jobs guys, looks great! I love how you can drag the itmes around.

  40. Great job!
Each point on the map, this is tagged POST, right?
I travel a lot, I want to create my blog and describe for example 500 placec around the world. If I use location to each post, I will see this points on homepage, on the map?

  41. Hello!

Great theme, which could fit for a theme update to my website. I do have a one question. Would it be possible to use the full-width view like on pages as well inside detailed article/blog posts? Thanks.

  42. @Nick, I have 3 questions, I would be very grateful if you could answer them.

    1. Is it possible to turn off the star-ratings?

    2. I understand that it is necessary to create a post for each marker but would it be possible, when a marker is clicked, to simply have the browser go to an external site, rather than have the post appear in the floating panel?

    3. Would it be possible to have one main post appear in the floating panel, that is not related to any particular marker, and which remains there constantly? I’m thinking along the lines of site welcome/introduction.

  43. Is the directory functionality will be added? Paid featured listings and PayPal integration will be welcome also.

  44. Well, after waiting a week, I guess I should just accept that this company do not bother to answer pre-sales questions.

Pity, the themes LOOK nice, but not a good idea to trust a company with no customer focus or culture of support.

  45. Nick,
Very cool! Is it customizable? I am not a wordpress developer, but if I hired a wordpress developer, could they make minor changes to it?

    • Anything can be customized if you are experienced enough. If you find the right developer, they should be able to help you out with tweaking the theme.

    • Hey Chris,

did you make the customizations you were looking for? If not, let me know and I might be able to assist you!

  46. Great Template … but to make it even better … This template tells people where and what … but if you could add functionality for “when”, this template would allow for events to be added as well.

When you have time, please think about … adding one of your date tags to the blog posts instead of the author photo. Adding a calendar widget that would let people sort events by date.

    • Yes, I agree with Donna. Is it possible to integrate some kind of Calendar widget to the Explorable theme so that events can be sorted by date instead of user rating.

      • You can change the post date to the event date. There is a calendar widget for the post date.

  47. I’m getting a job in industrial real estate and plan to use Explorable to build a proxy site that allows greater marketing flexibility. The star rating system is unnecessary for this purpose. As Jenny asked above with no reply, is it possible to remove the star rating function entirely?

Alternatively, it would be great to change it or just add a function for square/cubic footage. Please advise, and thank you for this great theme!

    • Hey Will,

I can help you on removing the rating system on the front-end of your site. If you need any assistance please let me know.

  48. Just searching for some mind blowing WordPress themes templates as i am looking to give a retouch for my site & just found it. Cheers mate.

  49. Are there any examples of this theme in live use ??

  50. I have installed it smoothly, but result is giving a very simple and plain template. Is there specific “explorable” installation procedure please ?

    Thank you

    • All installation instructions are included in the theme readme. If you need additional help, please open a thread in our support forums so that our team can assist you.

  51. Is it possible to change the “Homepage” to show a custom homepage and the “Explorable map homepage” as a sub page, eg map search page using the word press “reading” settings

  52. Love your theme.

Would be totally awesome if the different category listings could have different icons. So when you view all categories together there is a visual distinction between them.
    e.g. for restaurants – a blue icon with a fork, hotels – a green icon with a house etc…

    is this possible???

  53. It would be great to have an auto geo-locator specifically for mobile phone users. Meaning it should automatically show posts based on a user’s “phone” gps location… Please let me know if that’s possible …

    • I agree, this is what I am missing. I’d like to use Explorable with WordPress for ios, but this only allows creating of articles and not listings. Is there a way to overcome this problem?

  54. Hello Nick,
I must be missing something: I want to click on the post to access the full test, when I selected a location on the map, and I don’t seem to be able to do it.
I also tried to click on “map” when I was on a post and cannot do that either.
Can you let me know if this is something the theme does and how?
Because it seems to be that if I find an article exist on a location, I want to be able to access it.

  55. hi, is there a trial / demo version which I can download and test? thanks.

    • No I am afraid not, but we do offer a 30 day refund policy.

  56. Please provide the date of the latest update version for Explorable, we need to know the version number and what changes/fixes happened in that update.

Second, has Explorable been tested with WordPress Version 3.6?

    Thank you,

  57. Why there is no a zoom Button in the maps?! I can’t understand why there is not such button. I won’t buy this theme until the button is set because I find it very confusing for the user

  58. A great theme. Built but unfortunately, in my opinion, wrong.
It would have been great but if you can assign each item to a fixed location. This place might appear on the map.
Here, however, you now have a map with places where you can indeed write in something, but only once. But we often visited the site eg because there wants to write a report or leave because you were there in the park or whatever, then you can not. Very sad. Or what is my mistake in the theme?

  59. Can the “Star” system be shut off to the masses as a “rating tool” and be used by admin as a ‘service provided’ search tool..Example for a restaurant search, 5 stars – dine in – carry out – adult beverages – entertainment
4 stars – dine in – carry out – adult beverages
3 stars – dine in – carry out- delivery
2 stars – dine in – carry out
    1 stars – delivery only

  60. Hi there I am so gгatеful I found your web site,
I гeally found you by accident, while I ωas browѕing on Askjeеve for something else, Аnyways I am here now and would just lіke to say thank you foг a marvеlоus
post and a all rоund thrilling blog (I also lovе the thеme/design), I don’t have time to look over it аll at the moment but I have
book-marked it and also іncluded your RSS feeds, so
when Ӏ have time I will be back to read a great deal more, Ρlease do keep up the superb b.

  61. Hi there

I love this theme but I really can’t figure it out. I have done youtube searches but none of them really explain things. Like how do I get my already written posts to show up on the map or how do I direct them to the map? If I want a post on a mad do they have to be put in as listings? Help please

    • If you need any help, please open a ticket in our support forums so that our team can assist you.

  62. How difficult would it be to integrate automatically generated directions based upon IP Location to each of the individual directory listings?

Then subsequently be able to print ONLY the directions to a printer connected to an iPad or Android tablet?

  63. Hello Nick!

Is it possible to customize/personalize the little red buttons? I mean :

    – an eiffel tower in Paris, The opera in Sydney, The great wall in China,…

    Thank you!

  64. Hi, I was working with this theme for one of my client. I tried to display listing to my website home page but couldn’t do that. Can you tell me where is the problem? Here is the link of site where I was working. Waiting for your replay.

  65. Filling in farmer’s markets around Kauai

    • The site looks great Sunny 🙂

    • Hey Sunny

Id like to change the default map pin on my site to something else.
How did you change yours to that Carrot image?

      cheers mate

  66. Nice theme for desktops.
I tried it out, but for tablets or mobile its unsuitable.
The slide maps are not visible in responsive, so its difficult for visitors to find more information.
The links in the listview works deficient.

  67. The Ratings – Who issues these?

Can comments be added to each attraction?

  68. This is an amazing theme, especially if you want to create a directory of hotels, restaurants, beaches, etc.

I would suggest two more features:

    1. Show a thumb image when you roll over a place
    2. Add the filter buttons in the inner pages too.

  69. Nice theme! But have a problem with cluster markers on et_main_map, have a solvation? (Sorry for my bad English)

  70. Love this theme and the website we built with it!

Have a question though regarding functionality in Google Chrome.

If this theme does not work perfectly on all browsers

then I want to put this page down to the second level

so the site has a stable Home Pgae visible to everyone.

Comments? Advice? Help? In advance, thanks you!

  71. Great theme!

Any way we can add multiple listings through an import or some other process?

  72. Hi,

I have a quick little bit question, how can disable or stopped the blinking google map icon, it should be edited from CSS or PHP/HTML? My client, don’t want to see the blinking icon from google map.

I will wait your response as soon as possible.

    Thank you!

    • Hi, we’re happy to help. However the best place for us to follow up with you on this is probably via our forum

  73. Hi is there any way to stop the map from scrolling all the way out to where you see grey area?
